Who Shall Ascend the Hill of the Lord
“Let a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.” (Epistle: 1 Cor. 4:1. Gospel: Matt. 11:2.)
And the Gospel says, “Jesus began to say concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft raiment are in kings’ houses.
But what went ye out for to see? a prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before Thee.”
Ministers still prepare Christ’s way. What is all Gospel-preaching but a continuation of John’s ministry? The message is, and must be, still the same:—”Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. … The axe is laid to the root of the trees. … Every tree, therefore, that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. … I am not the Christ. … He that cometh after me is mightier than I.
